12-year-old girl used Uber to commit suicide. Her parents are blaming the company, here’s why

ORLANDO, Florida- A 12-year-old girl committed suicide in a parking garage after calling Uber for a ride, and now her family is blaming the company for her death.

According to KCCI, Benita “BB” Diamond, called an Uber on Jan. 10th after she took her mother’s phone in the middle of the night and downloaded the app. She used a gift card she received on Christmas to pay for the ride.

It was at the parking garage that she jumped off, falling to her death. She left a note behind which read “past the point of return.”

Her parents say that Uber has a policy where they’re NOT allowed to pick up minors without the consent of their parents, and the driver clearly didn’t follow that policy.

“If Uber had followed their policy, without a doubt, our daughter would still be here,” her father said. “That would have been the one red flag we would have caught. There is no way she’s getting away with that in our household. We were too much active parents.”

BB’s parents have sent a letter to Uber, demanding that they enforce their minor policy, and are thinking of taking legal actions against the company.

A spokesperson for the company did release a statement which said that the incident wasn’t reported to them in the past six months. They are going to investigate, and added they will  “will take appropriate action.”
