14 year old boy charged with the rape and murder of a 83 year old

Tyrone Harvin, 14, was charged with the murder and rape of 83 year old Dorothy Mae Neal on Friday.

Harvin will be charged as an adult because of Maryland’s law but police said in a conference he will be given the chance to be treated as a juvenile throughout the progression of his case.

Harvin is being accused of sexually assaulting the victim and killing her.

Neighbors became suspicious when they hadn’t seen the victim in several days and decided to call the police, who then found the 83 year old victim on Aug 29th laying on her apartment floor unconscious.

She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police believe Harvin attacked Neal after he went over to her home to help her with a chore.

Authorities say they knew the suspect was young  but never thought he would be 14 years old. Both were neighbors but the suspects mother doesn’t claim to have known the victim.

A woman claiming to be the suspects mother at the home said “I’m hurting because I know my son wouldn’t do nothing like this. I know my son”.

This is not the first time Harvin has been charged as an adult for a crime. He was recently taken off of his GPS monitor for a armed robbery charge.

Harvin was linked to the crime due to psychical evidence. He has been charged with murder and rape due to other offenses as well.

His preliminary hearing will be held on Sept 19.
