MICHIGAN- A 16-year-old boy has died after he was “wrongly” restrained.
According to CNN, on May 1st, Cornelius Fredericks died after suffering cardiac arrest when staff members at the Lakeside Academy restrained him after he threw a sandwich at one of them.
An autopsy was performed by the medical examiners office, who revealed that Fredricks died from “restraint asphyxia”, and they ruled his death a homicide.
On Wednesday, 3 employees from the faculty were charged with involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse.
“On May 1, a young man died because of restraints wrongly applied at a facility licensed by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS),” Director Robert Gordon said in a statement, adding “It was a tragedy and an outrage. We cannot bring this young man back to life, but we will not rest until we have changed the system that allowed his death. … We are committed to bringing needed change.”
