HOUSTON, TEXAS- A woman and her common-in-law husband appeared in court for the first time since being charged in connection to the death of their 8-year-old son.
The boy’s mother, Kayla Holzendorf, 24, and her common-in-law husband, Dominique Lewis, 28, appeared in court on Thursday.
The judge set bonds for the pair.
Holzendorf and Lewis were charged with injury to a child and tampering with evidence.
Charges may be upgraded for both, according to police, who found a pair of hidden handcuffs they believe were used on Keyontae Holzendorf.
Police found the boy’s body inside of a hotel room on Tuesday, after they received a call about a possible drowning. He had bruises all over his body, patches of missing skin, and other scars.
He also had marks on his ankles, which indicate the handcuffs that were found may have been used on him.
His mother told police that he got those injuries when falling off of a bike, but police found that story to be inconsistent with the markings on the boy.
A woman saw the boy with marks all over his body at a local store, and called police, to make a report of possible child abuse just 3 weeks before the boy died.
