Couple charged in the death of 12-year-old boy starved to death

PENNSYLVANIA- A couple has been charged in the death of a 12-year-old boy, who was tortured and starved to death.

Scott Schollenberger Jr., 42, and Kimberly Maurer, 35, are charged with homicide and child endangerment in the death of Maxwell Schollenberger, whose emaciated body was found on May 26th, inside the couple’s home.

According to PennLive.com, prosecutors say that the boy’s torture lasted for years, as he was kept in a dark, empty room, surrounded by his own feces, with the doors and windows locked shut. The boy never attended school, or was given medical attention.

An autopsy revealed that the boy weighed just 47.5 pounds, which is about half of the average wight for his age. He died from blunt force trauma complicating starvation/malnutrition.

The boy’s father and his fiance, admitted to investigators, that they used 3 metal hooks, to keep Max inside of the room.

The boy’s siblings were placed in the custody of children’s protective services. They told police, that they “hardly ever” saw their brother.

Schollenberger and Maurer are being held without bail at the Lebanon County Correctional Facility.
