Step-father of teen murdered in 2004 has been charged in cold case

MIAMI DADE- A man has been arrested, and charged in the death of his step-daughter who was murdered in 2004.

Raul Mata, 46, was arrested on Thursday for the murder of 16-year-old Dilicia Mejia.

Investigators say that they have cracked the 16-year-old cold case.

On Sept. 17, 2004, police were called to a residence, where they found Mejia, in her bedroom, with her throat slashed. Police say that Mata showed them exactly where her body was.

Mejia was murdered days after her birthday.

Medical examiner’s later ruled Mejia’s death a homicide, but her step-father was never a suspect.

Investigators say that Mata was a match for the DNA that was recovered from Dilcia’s fingernails by forensic specialists.

Mata was found in California, with a new life, that included a new wife and child.

School officials say that Mejia told a school counselor that Mata had made sexual advances towards her. What the school did what that information is unknown.

Mata has been charged with first-degree murder.
