OHIO- A police chief from the Sheffield Lake Police Department has been placed on leave after he was caught on surveillance footage leaving a Ku Klux Klan note on a Black officer’s jacket.
Sheffield Lake Mayor Dennis Bring told WKYC that once he was aware of the incident, he immediately placed Chief Antony Campo on administrative leave pending a review of the video.
Bring says he told Campo “I don’t want to even hear about it,” adding that he told the disgraced chief “You’ve already have admitted to it.” “You’ve got 10 minutes to get out of this office.’ he said. “I want your keys, badge and that’s it. Get out.”
Bring says he apologized to the unidentified Black officer.
Campo told WKYC in a phone interview that the note was meant to be part of an “off-color joke”, but it was “overblown”…
He also told the news station that he retired shortly after his leave.
