A New Jersey man has been arrested and charged after allegedly killing his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son.
Edwin A. Urbina, 27, has been charged with first-degree murder, endangering the welfare of children, fourth-degree tampering with evidence and third-degree tampering with a witness, according to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office in a press conference.
Police responded to a report on Aug. 13 about a 3-year-old in cardiac arrest. The toddler was later pronounced dead.
The medical examiner’s office determined the boy’s cause of death to be homicide. The boy had sustained “a number of physical injuries”.
Investigators say that Urbina allegedly beat the toddler, resulting in injuries that caused his death. Urbina had been babysitting the boy while his mother, Krystal Straw, wasn’t home.
Prosecutors say that when Straw did return home to find her son dying, she allegedly took Urbina to a location and THEN took her son to a Hospital.
The prosecutor’s office also alleges that Urbina asked Straw to deny his involvement in allegedly beating her son to death to police.
Straw, 28, was charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of children, third-degree tampering with a witness, third-degree hindering apprehension or prosecution and fourth-degree tampering with evidence.
