TEXAS- A man who beat his girlfriends 2-year-old daughter to death has been sentenced to life in prison.
Jadin Nunez, 27, was sentenced last week after a jury found him guilty of murdering Shannah McAlpine in 2019, reports the Killeen Daily Herald reports.
Prosecutors said police found Shannah unresponsive when they were dispatched to the home where she lived with her mother, Ashley Marie McAlpine, and Nunez.
Nunez beat Shannah after she had put her shoes on the wrong feet as they were getting ready to go to a store to buy supplies for her birthday party.
He struck the toddler in her face before he held her up in the air and punched her 3 times in the stomach.
Shannah’s mother called 911 hours later, after she noticed her daughter’s stomach “swollen and hot”. Police say McAlpine told them that she put Shannah in a shower to cool her down, but that the little girl was unable to stand and had difficulty breathing.
An autopsy determined that Shannah died from blunt force trauma to her stomach.
