RUSSIA- WNBA player Brittney Griner pleaded guilty to drug charges in a Moscow court Thursday.
The WNBA All Star, who walked into court with a photo of both her and her girlfriend, addressed the court in English, saying “I’d like to plead guilty, your honor.” But there was no intent. I didn’t want to break the law.”
Griner told the court she would testify at a later date, saying “I need to prepare,”
Prosecutors in Russia accused Griner of knowingly breaking the law when she was caught with 0.7 grams of cannabis oil in her luggage as she was entering the country in Feb.
Her plea comes days after she wrote a letter to President Biden, asking him to free her and other Americans who are imprisoned in Russia.
Griner was attempting to enter Russia in order to play for a Russian team during the WNBA’s off season.
She is facing up to 10 years in prison.
