Man Who Robbed Men He Slept With On Grindr Sentenced To 9 Years

CALIFORNIA- A man who robbed men he lured from the gay dating app Grindr was sentenced to 9 years in prison, according to the New York Post.

Derrick Patterson, 23, of Compton, would meet with his victims through Grindr, and once he was inside of their homes, hotel rooms, he would borrow their phones and sent cash to his accounts.

In one incident in 2018, Patterson was having sex with one victim before he transferred money to himself.

Prosecutors said when the victim noticed what happened, he confronted Patterson, who went to the kitchen and threatened the victim with a knife. He then used the victim’s Venmo account and stole $3,950, reports the news outlet.

Patterson also used the victim’s phone to pay for hotels and solicit money from the victim’s family and friends who were in Nevada.

In Feb. of 2022, Patterson asked to borrow another victim’s phone, and then chased the victim with a stun gun, demanding money. He was able to rob the victim of jewelry and $120.

Patterson also used the victims Apple Pay account and opened a line of credit using the victim’s name.

Along with the 9 years he must serve, he was also ordered to pay $84,195 in restitution.
