Rapper YNW Melly’s Double-Murder Trial Ends In Mistrial, What Happens Now?

FLORIDA- Rapper YNW Melly’s double-murder trial ended in a mistrial on Saturday.

The 12-chamber panel couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict after three days of deliberations. A unanimous verdict is required to convict or acquit a defendant.

So, what happens now?

Broward County prosecutors, who were seeking the death penalty for Melly, may most likely choose to retry the case with a new jury.

YNW Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, is accused of shooting and killing his two best friends, Anthony Williams and Christopher Thomas Jr. Both were of the YNW collective, known as YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser.

Prosecutors argued that Melly shot and killed Williams and Thomas Jr. on Oct. 26, 2018, as they were riding in a Jeep driven by Cortland Henry, known as YNW Bortlen. Henry was charged as an accomplice.

Prosecutors argued that Melly killed both of his friends as part of a “gang action, but they failed to show any evidence that proved YNW Melly indeed killed his two best friends, who he has tattooed on his face, and there was no clear motive.
