FLORIDA- Rapper YNW Melly is asking for a judge to release him on bond as he awaits his double-murder trial.
Attorneys for the rapper filed a motion on Tuesday to have a hearing held to determine whether he should be released from jail on bond, according to NBC 6.
Melly’s defense team argued that his co-defendant Cortland Henry, known as YNW Bortlen, is facing the same charges, but was granted bond, the outlet reported.
YNW Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, is accused of killing his two childhood friends, Christopher Thomas Jr. and Anthony Williams in Oct. of 2018. They were part of the YNW collective.
Prosecutors believe Melly shot and killed Williams and Thomas while in the backseat of a car driven by Cortlen.
The rapper’s trial ended in a mistrial on July 22.
There is no clear motive for the killings, despite prosecutors claiming Melly killed his two best friends to gain a higher rank in the Bloods gang.
Melly was charged with double murder and has been behind bars since 2019.
