Carlee Russell Arrested And Charged For Faking Kidnapping, Smiles In Mugshot

ALABAMA- Carlee Russell was arrested and charged for faking kidnapping after surrendering to police.

Russell was arrested on two misdemeanor charges, false reporting to law enforcement authorities and falsely reporting an incident.

Each charge carries up to a year in jail and a $6,000 fine if she’s convicted.

She was released from jail after posting bond.

During a July 28 press conference, Hoover Police Chief Nicholas C. Derzis announced that Russell, 26, had admitted to faking her kidnapping.

“There was no kidnapping, my client didn’t see a baby,” Russell’s attorney, Emory Anthony, wrote in a statement that was read at the press conference.

Neither Russell nor Anthony were present at the conference.

25-year-old Carlethia “Carlee” Nichole Russell called 911 on Thursday around 9:34 p.m. to report a toddler she saw walking along the side of Interstate 459 South near Birmingham, according to the Hoover Police Department.

Carlee appeared 49 hours later at her home. She was taken to a hospital for an evaluation but stop cooperating with investigators.

Police say she searched for bus price tickets and movies on kidnapping on the day she faked her abduction.
