Derek Chauvin sentenced to prison for murdering George Floyd

MINNEAPOLIS- Former police officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison on Friday for the murder of George Floyd.

Judge Peter Cahill handed down the sentence to Chauvin, 45, who showed no emotion in court. Cahill told Chauvin “This is based on your abuse of a position of trust and authority and also the particular cruelty shown to George Floyd.”

Chauvin, with no remorse on his face, gave a half-ass apology to the family of George Floyd, telling them “Due to some additional legal matters at hand, I am not able to give a full formal statement at this time, but briefly, I want to give my condolences to the Floyd family”

He added “There is going to be some other information in the future that will be of interest and I hope things will give you some peace of mind. Thank you.”

Chauvin’s sentencing is a shock to many, as it’s believed that the time doesn’t fit the crime.

He was found guilty in April of three charges, second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter after a 3-week trial.

The former cop murdered George Floyd in May of 2020, after kneeling on his neck for almost 9 minutes in front of a crowd of people who recorded the murder. Floyd wasn’t resisting arrest and told Chauvin he couldn’t breathe.
