Ex-cop Kim Porter was sentenced to JUST two years in prison on Friday for killing Daunte Wright, after claiming she confused her gun for her taser.
Porter was convicted of manslaughter in Dec. for Wright’s fatal shooting.
The sentence came after Porter tearfully apologized to Wright’s mother, telling her “To the family of Daunte Wright, I am so sorry that I brought the death of your son, father, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, to your home.”
Addressing Wright’s mother directly, Porter said “Katie, I understand a mother’s love, and I am sorry I broke your heart. My heart is broken for all of you.”
Wright’s mother asked judge Regina Chu for the “highest accountability” in Porter’s sentencing.
Katie Wright told judge Chu “She took our baby boy with a single gunshot through his heart, and now she shattered mine.”
Katie added “As if killing him wasn’t enough to dehumanize him, she never once said his name,” she said, before turning to Potter and telling her “And for that, I’ll never be able to forgive you.”
Porter shot Wright once in the chest during a traffic. He was unarmed and had attempted to pull away from her and another officer after it was discovered he had an outstanding warrant.
Wright was a young working father who leaves behind a son..
