FLORIDA – A retired Marine and GameStop employee was charged after fatally shooting a college student who allegedly shoplifted Pokemon cards, police said.
Derrick Guerrero, 33, was working at a GameStop at a strip mall on Tuesday night when a man allegedly grabbed 5 boxes of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet “ultra-premium” trading cards, which each cost $120 and ran towards the store’s door, according to a statement by the Pembroke Pines police department.
According to police reports, Guerrero took a handgun out of his waistband and fired one shot, striking 21-year-old Chadrick Coats.
Coats later died from his injuries.
Guerrero was taken into custody at the Broward County Jail and charged with manslaughter.
He was later released after posting a $25,000 bond.
