Former Wu-Tang Clan Studio Worker Wins $7M For Wrongful Murder Conviction

NYC- The city of New York announced that it will pay $7 million to a former studio worker who worked for the rap group Wu-Tang Clan, in compensation for a wrongful 1997 murder conviction.

Grant Williams was exonerated last year in the murder of 20-year-old Shdell Lewis.

Williams will receive the settlement for his claims of police misconduct and civil rights violations, city comptroller Brad Lander announced.

“Grant Williams spent 23 years in jail for a crime that he did not commit,” Lander said. “While no amount of money can bring those years back for Mr. Williams or his family, I am pleased that we were able to move quickly to a fair and early resolution of this claim.”

Williams was convicted in 1997 despite the fact he didn’t fit the description given to police by witnesses, prosecutors had no murder weapon, no confession or any significant evidence.

Police also withheld information from witnesses that said Williams wasn’t the shooter and a statement from his friend saying he was with Williams at another location the night of the murder.

Williams proclaimed his innocence through many appeals, until an investigation into Lewis’ death was opened in 2017.

He was released from prison in 2019.
