According to bloombergquint.com, Norway is investigating whether Tidal’s streaming numbers were inflated. Tidal, is a streaming service owned by Jay-Z, which is based on subscriptions, providing their customers with video streaming and music.
Norway’s National Authority for Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Environmental Crime, a.k.a. Økokrim are conducting the investigation after reports popped up last May that 320 million streams of Beyonce’s Lemonade and Kanye West’s The Life Of Pablo were fraudulent.
These reports came about from the Norwegian financial newspaper Dagens Næringsliv which reported that Tidal had inflated their listening numbers of artist like Jay-Z’s wife Beyonce and Kanye West. A spokesperson for the company said “Tidal is not a suspect in the underlying investigation, we’re communicating with Okokrim. We are aware that at least one person we suspected of theft has been questioned.”
Dagens Naeringsliv has reported that Økokrim may have cross-examined four former Tidal employees for a total of 25 hours.
On top of being accused of allegedly inflating their streams for Beyonce and Kanye West’s albums, Tidal is also being accused of inflating it’s overall subscriber numbers from 350,000 to 1 million. Yikes.
