James Franco has been casted to play Fidel Castro in an upcoming film, and John Leguizamo, along with others in the Latin community aren’t very happy about the white actor playing the role.
Leguizamo took to his Instagram to show his disapproval of Franco’s new role, calling the move culture appropriation and slamming Hollywood for casting a white actor to play the Cuban dictator in the upcoming film “Alina of Cuba.”
“How is this still going on? How is Hollywood excluding us but stealing our narratives as well? No more appropriation Hollywood and streamer!”, Leguizamo wrote.
“Boycott! This F’d up! Plus seriously difficult story to tell without aggrandizement which would b wrong!”.
He added “I don’t got a prob with Franco but he ain’t Latino!”.
Leguizamo has always been outspoken about the lack of diversity with Latin actors in Hollywood.
The “Alina Of Cuba” filmmakers have somehow tried to justify their decision by saying that Castro, who was born in Cuba, was mixed because his parents were Spanish, making his European, just like Franco, who is also mixed…
There is no release date for the indie film.
