FLORIDA- A judge ruled on Friday that jurors can choose the death penalty for YNW Melly.
The rapper’s double-murder trial is set to begin on June 20, but before jurors have been chosen, Broward Circuit Judge John Murphy granted state prosecutors motion to allow jurors to recommend the death penalty with an 8-4 vote instead of a unanimous vote if the rapper is convicted, the Miami Herald reports.
The 8-4 vote to recommend a death penalty is the lowest threshold in the country.
Melly’s death penalty case is one of the first to be considered since the law was recently passed.
Melly, 24, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of two of his best friends, YNW Sakchaser and YNW Juvie.
Sakchaser and Juvie were shot and killed on Oct. 26, 2018.
