CHICAGO – Actor Jussie Smollett was released from jail on Wednesday after being charged with staging his own attack.
The 39-year-old was released pending his appeal of his 150-day sentence.
The former ‘Empire’ actor posted a $150,000 recognizance bond, which didn’t require him to pay cash.
Smollett was released from jail after serving just 7 days in Cook County jail.
His release comes two days after the actor’s attorneys asked the judge to release the actor while his appeal is pending, stating that Smollett’s stay in jail could put his mental and physical state at risk.
Smollett was housed in protective custody while in jail. He had cameras in his cell and guards outside around the clock.
Smollett reported to police that he was attacked by two white males in Jan. 2019 as they yelled racial and homophobic slurs at him while wearing MAGA hats.
Police later discovered the actor had staged the attack by hiring two brothers to help him.
