Jussie Smollett’s attorney says that all criminal charges against him have been dropped.
The judge also granted a motion to seal Smollett’s record in the case. Smollett also voluntarily agreed to forfeit his bond in order to get “on with his life.”
The Cooks County Attorney’s office said in a statement “After reviewing all the facts and circumstances of the case, including Mr. Smollett’s volunteer service in the community and agreement to forfeit his bond to the city of Chicago, we believe this outcome is a just disposition and appropriate resolution,” the Cook County Attorney’s Office said in a separate statement.
His attorneys said in a separate statement “Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify,” the statement said. “He was a victim. He was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator as a result of false and inappropriate remarks made to the public causing an inappropriate rush to judgment.
The “Empire” actor had been charged with felony 16 counts for falsifying a police report after claiming he was the target of a homophobic and racist attack.
I don’t think people saw this situation having an ending like this.
Smollett also spoke to the public briefly, in which he said “I want to thank my family, my friends, the incredible people of Chicago and all over the country and the world who have prayed for me, who have supported me, who have shown me so much love,” Smollett said. “I want you to know that not for a moment was it in vain. I have been truthful and consistent on every single level since day one. I would not be my mother’s son if I was capable of one drop of what I’ve been accused of.”
Smollett told Chicago police that he was attacked by two masked men as he was exiting a Subway restaurant at around 2 a.m.. He said that they poured bleach on him and even out a noose around his neck. Police then identified two men in question who told police that Smollett paid them $3,500 to set up the fake attack.
