CHICAGO- A date has been set for actor Jussie Smollett’s trial.
Smollett’s trial will begin in November over his alleged hate crime hoax. This comes after a judge dismissed his lawyer’s request to dismiss the case on Friday.
Judge James Linn says jury selection will begin on November 29.
The openly gay actor is accused of lying to police in 2019, after making a report that he was beaten up by two white males in a homophobic and hate crime attack.
Smollett told police that the two men who attacked him wore MAGA hats and put a noose on his head after they assaulted him.
After an investigation, it was discovered that the actor had set-up the “attack”, by hiring two brothers to beat him up because he was upset over his salary at Empire.
The 39-year-old actor was initially charged with filing a false police report, but those charges were dropped by Cook County State Attorney Kim Foxx. After a judge assigned a special prosecutor to the case, Smollett was charged with six new counts of disorderly conduct in 2020.
