MISSOURI- A man hunting for deer antlers discovered the remains of a missing MMA fighter nearly two years after he went missing.
Police say they were called to the woods near Fall Creek Road on Dec. 22 for a report of the discovery of suspected human remains, police said Monday.
When police arrived at the scene, they confirmed the remains were human.
The remains were identified as those belonging to David Koenig, who was reported missing about 21 months ago. He was an MMA fighter.
“The examination of the remains conducted by a forensic pathologist determined that there was no trauma and that the death did not appear to be the result of foul play,” police said.
On the last day Koenig was seen alive, he had texted multiple people saying that he feared his life was in danger and was seeking their help, but a missing person’s report wasn’t filed until weeks later.
Koenig’s mother told FOX 7 Kanas City that her son battled with drug addiction and would disappear for up to several weeks at a time without contacting his family or friends.
