Mother found guilty for the brutal torture & murder of her 3 year old daughter

A woman was convicted of second-degree murder, torture and assault resulting in the death of a child in the 2015 killing of her 3 year old daughter Kimberly Chavez Lopez according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office in a press release on Monday.

Mayra Alejandra Chavez, 27, had lost custody of her daughter Kimberly several times, beginning at birth, when the baby tested positive for both methamphetamine and marijuana according to prosecutors.

The baby was then placed in foster care for almost nine months.

She then returned back to the care of her mother, after Lopez completed drug and parenting classes.

Kimberly was placed into foster care for about nine months, then was returned to her mother’s care after Chavez completed drug and parenting classes, the DA’s office said.

In 2016, Ventura and Family services reported that they had been trying to locate the Kimberly but couldn’t. They had last saw the girl in March of 2015.

Chavez continued to torture the toddler, until she was taken away again. Although Chavez was only allowed to have supervised visits under Kimberly’s father and her mother, authorities believe this was around the time that she killed her daughter.

According to the Ventura County Star, Kimberly’s father, Omar Lopez, who was arrested with Chavez on Feb, 2018 in connection to Kimberly’s death.

The newspaper also said that Lopez told jurors that what killed Kimberly, was when Chavez pulled the toddlers legs from underneath her to change her diaper, causing her to hit her head and suffer seizures.

Lopez told the court that Chavez disposed of Kimberly’s body in Tijuana.

Lopez testified against Chavez in change for a shorter sentence. He also agreed to plead guilty to charges of child endangerment and perjury. He’s being expected to serve 14 years in prison.

Chavez will face 47 years to life in prison when she’s sentenced on March 14, 2019.
