GEORGIA- Police who arrested Brianna Grier, failed to secure her with a seatbelt or even close the passenger-side rear door at all before she fell out of the patrol and died, according to an update by state investigators this week.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s office had initially told Grier’s family that she had kicked the door open herself when she was arrested on July 15, after her family called 911 and told them she was experiencing a mental-health crisis.
The officer who was driving said “As I turned to see what Brianna Grier was doing, I hear the passenger-side door open,” according to sheriff’s office documents obtained by 13WMAZ local CBS affiliate.
That officer’s statement isn’t consistent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s newest findings, which were released on Wednesday.
Grier was allegedly refusing to get into the patrol car. Once inside, officers did not put a seat belt on her, or close the passenger-side door, as seen on body camera footage.
Police realized she had fell out of the patrol car after a “short distance”.
Grier was taken to a hospital where she died from her injuries.
Grier’s family has retained high-powered civil rights attorney Ben Crump.
