SPAIN- Singer Shakira may be facing 8 years in prison for allegedly defrauding Spain’s government after failing to pay taxes.
The singer is accused of failing to pay 14.5 million euros ($15 million) in taxes on income she earned between 2012 and 2014, according to Reuters.
Shakira claims that she did not live in Spain during those dates, but prosecutors allege that she was a resident at the time, even buying a home in Barcelona with her boyfriend in 2012.
According to the singer’s reps, Shakira has paid the amount owed to the Spanish Tax Agency, which was 17.2 euros and has no pending tax debts, according to reports.
Shakira was charged in 2018, but on July 29, docs revealed that a prosecutor is seeking an -year term for the singer as well as a fine of more than $23.5 million if she’s found guilty during a trial.
A date has not been set.
