Rapper YNW Melly’s Double Murder Trial Pushed Back Again, Here’s Why

FLORIDA – Rapper YNW Melly’s double murder trial has been delayed again.

The trial has been pushed back at the request of the Florida rapper’s attorneys.

On Dec. 20, Broward Circuit Court Judge John Murphy granted a continuance, or an extension on behalf of Melly’s legal team, who also waived his right to a speedy trial. Court docs show Murphy set a new trial date for March 5, according to the Miami Herald.

With Melly’s attorneys waiving his right to a speedy trial, his defense team and the prosecution have more freedom to introduce delays to be prepared for trial.

The trial is currently going through jury selection.

Melly’s defense now has time to conduct more than a dozen pending depositions, or interviews taken before trial with state witnesses. Depositions for late Dec. and early Jan. were canceled this week, according to court docs, the outlet reports.

Dozens of new witnesses were added into evidence.

55 songs of the rapper have also been added as new evidence.

“They are the defendant’s own words and therefore amount to an admission and/or adoptive,” the state said in a filing.
