The decision comes weeks after the state tried to use lyrics from the rapper’s songs, which included “Gunsmoke” from his 2020 album Still Flexin, Still Steppin and “Life Support” from his 2021 album Sincerly, Kentrell to try and link him to the gun charges he’s facing.
Prosecutors attempted to use both songs because they reference an FN .45 caliber pistol, which is what he was arrested with last year.
NBA Youngboy, whose real name is Kentrell Gaulden, was arrested by the LAPD on March 22, 2021, after police attempted to arrest him for an outstanding federal warrant.
Police say they tried to pull Youngboy over after he left his L.A. home, but the rapper reportedly led them on a small chase before he continued to flee on foot.
The rapper was found by police later on after they used helicopters and K-9 dogs. Police then found a gun in the backseat floorboard of the Maybach he was driving.
He was arrested by the FBI and was later granted bond but a judge in Louisiana ordered him to stay in custody due to another case in Baton Rouge.
NBA Youngboy was granted bond in Oct. of 2021 in Louisiana and placed on house arrest.
The rapper’s trial will last four days. He faces years in prison if convicted in Louisiana and California.
