JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA- Rapper Y&R Mookey was sentenced to 10 years on Tuesday.
The Florida rapper, whose real name is Tyler Jackson, was sentenced by Judge Meredith Charbula after he was convicted in Feb. of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Judge Charbula told the 23-year-old that she believed a 20-year-sentence was far too excessive for his crime, but that he poses a danger to society, reports firstcoastnews.com.
Jackson told the judge “I’m not a violent person. I’m not no gang member,” he said. “Music is my craft and how I make my livelihood and should not be taken literally. I’m an entertainer who gives his fans what they want to see and hear.”
The judge then sentenced the rapper to serve 7 years in prison followed by 3 years of probation, according to firstcoastnews.com.
Jackson was arrested in 2019, along with 6 other people as part of a sting Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office called “Operation Rap-Up” The operation was targeting alleged gang members who were showing drugs, guns, money and more on social media.
