NEW YORK CITY- New York’s Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed a bill making recreational marijuana legal.
The bill was signed by Cuomo on Wednesday after hours of debate on Tuesday.
“This is a historic day in New York, one that rights the wrongs of the past by putting an end to harsh prison sentences, embraces an industry that will grow the Empire State’s economy, and prioritizes marginalized communities so those that have suffered the most will be the first to reap the benefits,” Cuomo said in a statement.
So, what does this mean for smokers?
Any New Yorker over 21 will now be legally allowed to possess up to 3 ounces of marijuana outside of their home and up to 5 pounds at home.
New Yorker’s are also allowed to now smoke pot in public where smoking tobacco is permitted.
Smoking inside of schools, workplaces or cars are NOT permitted.
The new law takes cannabis off the list of controlled substances and legal marijuana could be sold in licensed dispensaries as soon as next year!
All cannabis taxes will be deposited into the state’s special cannabis revenue fund with 40% going to education, 40% to the Community Grants Reinvestment Fund and 20% to the Drug Treatment and Public Education Fund.
