Suspect Shot Lyft Driver, Stole Car And Drove To Family Gathering

INDIANA- A man is accused of killing a Lyft driver, stealing his car and driving it to a family function, authorities said.

Devin Powell was arrested and charged with killing rideshare driver Anthony Garland.

Firefighters found Garland facedown Thursday around 6 a.m. He had visible injuries to his head, and six gunshots wounds near Waterfront Parkway Drive, according to court docs. Authorities also found a plastic bloody glove nearby, reports the Indianapolis Star.

Garland was pronounced dead on the scene.

Records from Lyft show Powell was the last person to call Garland.

Powell was later found with his cousin in Garlands car. His cousin told police that the car had belonged to Powell, and he was driving them to a family event.

Powell initially told police he found the car unattended at a gas station and stole it, but later admitted to killing Garland, in an alleged act of self-defense, telling police that the rideshare driver had tried to “screw” him over and take his money, according to the New York Daily News.

Police say Powell admitted to dumping Garland’s on the side of the road.

He’s facing murder and robbery charges.
