A Colorado teen has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his mother’s boyfriends 10-year-old daughter.

According to Boston 25 News, Aiden Zellmer, 17, was sentenced to life in prison with the chance of parole after 40 years after he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on Monday for the 2017 death of Kiaya Cambel. With good behavior, he could be released in 30 years.

The Denver Post reported that according to arrest documents Zellmar’s mother reported both him and Cambel as missing. When police found Zellmar, he told police that after destroying Kiaya’s Pokemon cards, he decided to steal some. Zellmar then told police that as a thunderstorm approached, he got into an argument with Kiaya on whether they should where they were at or go home. He added that as they went home, he lost Kiaya.

Zellmar cried to investigators and said he had gotten annoyed with Kiaya and just left her, but that obviously wasn’t the truth.

The coroner’s office said she died of blunt force trauma to the head and injuries to her fingers according to KDVR.
