JAPAN- A Japanese man named the “Twitter Killer” was sentenced to death on Tuesday for killing 9 people and dismembering their bodies.
30-year-old Takahiro Shiraishi was found guilty of murder, dismembering and storing the bodies of the victims in his apartment.
Shiraishi targeted those who were suffering from depression on Twitter, according to prosecutors. He would contact his victims from his account, which handle translated to “hangman” after they expressed suicidal thoughts.
Shiraishi would then invite his victims over to home. His defense team argued that the victims gave him permission to end their lives, but prosecutors argued that the victims were killed without their approval.
Police discovered all 9 victims in 2017, after they were investigating the disappearance of a young girl, who ended up being one of Shiraishi’s victims.
The serial killer strangled and mutilated 8 woman and one man, with ages ranging from 15 to 26 from August to October of 2017.
