MEMPHIS- Two men charged with murder in the death of rapper Young Dolph pleaded not guilty in court Friday.
Lawyers for Cornelius Smith and Justin Johnson entered the pleas in Shelby County Criminal Court in Memphis, reports localmemphis.
Smith and Johnson were indicted in Jan. 17 in the killing of Memphis rapper Young Dolph at Makeda’s Homemade Cookies.
Police said two male suspects got out of a stolen Mercedes-Benz and fired into the shop as the rapper was about to exit the cookie shop. Surveillance footage was released, and police shared photos taken from video that captured the shooting.
Prosecutor Paul Hagerman told reporters outside of the courthouse that they believe they know the motive behind Dolph’s killing but aren’t released details, according to localmemphis.
Both men could face the death penalty.
Smith and Johnson, career criminals, have lengthy records. Johnson, 23, was arrested as he was traveling on a highway in Indiana on Jan. 11 where he was stopped and arrested on a murder warrant by the U.S. Marshals Service.
Smith, 32, was arrested in Dec. on an auto-theft warrant involving the vehicle used in Dolph’s killing.
They are currently being held without bail.
