The NYPD officer who used an illegal chokehold on Eric Garner has been suspended effective Friday, Aug 2nd.
A New York administrative judge is the one who recommended that Daniel Pantaleo actually be fired, but that decision is now up to the NYPD commissioner James O’Neill.
Pantaleo was caught on cellphone footage using an illegal chokehold on Eric Garner in 2014.
Garner’s last words were “I can’t breathe.” He died minutes later.
His family has been seeking justice, and it’s in my opinion that the city of New York obviously didn’t do what they should have. They have showed a great example of injustice.
Patrick J. Lynch, president of the city’s Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, says “If it is allowed to stand, it will paralyze the NYPD for years to come.”
Garner’s daughter, Emerald Garner Snipes said in a press conference, “This has been a long battle. Five years too long. And finally, someone has said this cop has done something wrong’, she also told the commissioner “do your job.”
