CHICAGO- Police mistook the ashes of a child for drugs, and dumped the urn in front of a grieving father during a traffic stop.
Dartavius Barnes was pulled over by police last year. Police detained him and illegally searched his vehicle while looking for drugs.
During their search, an officer opened the bag of Barnes’ 2-year-old daughter’s ashes, as Barnes pleaded “No, no, no, bro, that’s my daughter!”.
The officer is then seen purposely spilling the ashes on the floor as Barnes grieved in front of them.
Barnes is planning on suing the Springfield Police Dept.
Barnes’ daughter, Ta’Naja died in 2019 after police found her unresponsive inside of a urine-soaked blanket. She had been starved and neglected days before her death by her mother and her boyfriend, according to WICS.
The girl’s mother and her boyfriend were both charged with the toddler’s death and were sentenced to prison.
